lawlessness is a harsh mistress

Once upon a time there were a bunch of pirates, and they seized an oil tanker. It was called the MV Sirius Star, and it was very valuable. They held it for two months, while the “international community” gnashed its teeth and swore furious oaths. Then someone cut the crap and airdropped three million dollars to the pirates. Boom- problem solved.

But the tale doesn’t end there. Some of the pirates, in their haste to escape with a share of the loot, drove their little boat too hard and went under:

Now, said the pundits, we can plainly see: it is true as our authorities tell us, that indeed crime does not pay. But the pundits were not to have the final word, as the sea offered up its treasures:

In the end, someone got paid. No one’s very clear on who grabbed the cash, or whether they had any claim to it, but they got paid. For whatever that’s worth.
